After a spectacular start to the Motorsport UK Wera Tools British Kart Championships at Shenington, Warden Law plays host to the next round of the 2022 season for the IAME, TKM and KZ2 categories this weekend [20-22 May].
They will be joined by the hotly contested Bambino class who open their season at the North East track. Designed specifically for 6-8-year-olds, the series offers the chance to get their grounding in karting and it utilises the Comer kart to ensure a level playing field throughout.
With bumper to bumper racing littering the opening round, Britains’s premier karting series will undoubtedly offer the same thrilling encounter as the Sunderland circuit offers up a technical and narrow track, guaranteeing nose to tail action with tightly packed trains a regular feature.
A tried and tested racecraft is essential at Warden Law and inch-perfect laps will be required to steal the march in qualifying. Converting that into a good Final result can also be tricky, but this in turn offers us more of the closely fought racing we have come to admire from the BKC contenders.
The Wera Tools sponsored series will see 170 karters taking part and spectators are welcome to watch the action trackside. Class Round Up
IAME Cadet
Fusion Motorsport currently occupies the top three places in the championship with Jenson Graham sitting on top of the standings with a slender two-point advantage over teammate Kit Belofsky who took the all-important round one Finals win. Jesse Phillips is third heading to Warden Law but it was a tight tussle for the lead in the Shenington Finals, just 0.11s separated the podium.
Henry Domain leads the Oliver Rowland Motorsport charge in fourth whilst the ‘O plate’ of Jorge Edgar rounds out the top five. However, at this early stage of the championship, only 17 points separate the top eight so expect the fight for maximum points to be thrilling.
Junior X30
An impressive 48 drivers contested the opening round of the season and as such, the action in Junior X30 is set to be scintillating. A busy weekend at Shenington was topped off by the Finals being decided on the very last lap, with Henry Joslyn [Mick Barrett Racing] scooping the win whilst the podium positions were fought for across the line.
Fionn McLaughlin was edged into fourth or Fusion Motorsport but such was his Heat and Pre-Final performance, he heads to Warden law with a two-point advantage over a very busy Harry Burgoyne Jnr. The Strawberry Racing ace also scooped Rotax Junior honours at PF International and is aiming to “do a Guinchard” and win both IAME and Rotax titles in the same year.
Gabriel Stilp rounded out the podium for Croc Promotion at Shenington and is just one point behind Burgoyne Jnr in the standings, whilst Leo Robinson is fourth for Fusion Motorsport with Joslyn fifth after a tricky start to his weekend in the Heats and Pre-Final.
Senior X30
Harry Platten [BMR] enjoyed a progressive weekend at the opener to fight back from outside the podium places to take the Finals win. But it’s Aaron Walker for Strawberry Racing who leads the standings thanks to the Heats and Pre-Finals win, although he only has two points in hand over Platten.
Bart Harrison [Mick Barrett Racing] is currently third after a consistent Shenington with Gus Lawrence fourth for PF International Karting. Tom Flemming [DHR] fought with Platten throughout the final to take second, but a slow start to the meeting means he is fifth after round one.

Junior TKM
Leon Frost enjoyed the perfect score in Junior TKM with victory in the Heats and Finals, but only after battling with Olivia Jakins in the Final and squeezing passed at the Bruno Chicane on the final lap. The TWM teammates enjoyed a bumper to bumper final with Ollie Rands rounding out the podium. Dara McInerney is level with Rands on points to give TWM a top four lockout.
Luke bate is the leading RSR challenger in fifth as the series heads to Warden Law.
TKM Extreme
Warden could throw up some surprises but it was Privateer Chris Whitton who leads the way thanks to a start-to-finish TKM Extreme Final. Sam Johns [TWM] had a less than favourable Heat but recovered to take runner up spot although he is 20 points adrift of the leader.
Lee Whittingham was a consistent protagonist during the weekend to head to round two second in the standings and just one point behind Whitton and two ahead of Kye Springfield.

KZ2
The gearbox karts of the KZ2 category will feel very much at home at Warden Law and despite missing out on the win at Shenington in the Heats and Finals, it’s Dan Kelly for Andy Fairless Racing that leads the way.
James Glenister [Rush performance] dominated the KZ2 Final but had a tricky Heat and is only fourth heading to the weekend, meaning Kell’s nearest challenger is Privateer Lee Ward; and he sits just one point behind to boot.
Rush’s Charlie Turner took two third places to lie third in the standings as former champ Joe Charlton rounds out the top five.

BAMBINO
The young racers have had a patient wait to kick start their 2022 BKC season and Warden Law host the opening round of the year. It is an open formbook and 13 karters line up to do battle on the impressive circuit. Oman Austin makes a return to the series after taking seventh in 2021 and is joined by a wealth of newcomers as they all aim for round one glory.
