The penultimate round of the Rotax British Kart Championships took place last weekend, 17th – 18th October, at Clay Pigeon Raceway, Dorchester. Over 120 drivers attended the elite sporting event but only five were crowned the winners.
The event started with practice sessions on Friday, followed by timed qualifying sessions and the first of the heats on Saturday. Racing commenced on Sunday with the remainder of the heats, pre-finals and finals.
During the weekend, the championship round also hosted the Micro Max Grand Final Qualifier, where the winner and second place drivers won tickets to the Grand Final in Portimao in January and kept their engines. The driver who finished in third place also got to keep their engine as a prize, kindly donated by JAG Rotax.
After a stunning performance in the final, Jacob Ashcroft was victorious in the Micro Max class, earning himself a place in the Grand Final in Portimao. Also claiming a ticket and lifting the second place trophy was Harrison Whitticombe. Ethan Spanswick made up the podium and all three drivers got to keep their engines.
In the Mini Max class, Harry Linden climbed to the top of the podium, extending his championship lead to 38 points. Joining him on the podium was Pierson Bullock-Carter and Arun Phull. Linden hopes to claim the title during the final round of the championship at PFi in November.
Junior Rotax and DHR drivers Matthew Higgins and Harrison Collings claimed the two top steps of the podium in their respective class. Joining them and finishing third in the final race was Mattie Hingley. Higgins currently sits third in the standings and only 11 points separate the top three championship contenders. The Championship title is still up for grabs and will be for the taking during the final round of the championship.
The Hunter brothers battled for position during the final Senior Rotax race on Sunday, but only one could be victorious out of the 34-driver grid. In an electrifying encounter, Kai pipped his brother Rhys to lift the first-place trophy by less than half a second. Joining the brothers on the podium was Jack Steadman after climbing two places during the race.
Despite finishing in eighth place during the race, GP plate holder Morgan Porter still leads the championship and hopes to take the title during the next round.
Henry Ayers was crowned this weekend’s winner in the Rotax 177 class, ahead of Cole Edwards. Colin Davis initially crossed the line in first place but an unfortunate penalty saw him drop back to third place.
Only 10 points separate the top three Rotax 177 drivers in the championship standings, with Oliver Appleby leading ahead of Matthew Easton and Ayers. Again, it will be all to play for during the next round at PFI, where we will crown our 2020 Rotax British Kart Champions.
